Braces for Fun
I hated my braces at sixteen,
I love them at thirty one.
What I love about wearing Braces for Fun…
I recently filmed another project with Fancy Steel, that gave me the opportunity to wear cosmetic braces from Braces for Fun!
The film is centred on a transformation: my character begins as a nerdy college student being bullied, before being transformed into a powerful, confident mistress.
Fancy Steel produces adults-only films intended for audiences aged 18 and over. I love movies that give me the opportunity to step into a character and do something outside of everyday life. This movie was playful, unconventional and memorable; but there was another part of the experience that became personal for me. Once we began creating the character, the story became more meaningful than I expected.
It wasn’t only because of the transformation.
It was the braces.
Why It Meant More to Me Than I Expected…
I wore braces as a teenager, and I was also bullied at school. At an age when most of us are still trying to understand who we are and hoping to fit in, being bullied made me deeply self-conscious about parts of myself that were completely normal.
Years later, as an adult I find myself putting braces on again while portraying a character who transforms from someone being ridiculed, into a woman who is confident, powerful and entirely in control.
This time, I wasn’t the insecure teenager embarrassed about how she looked. I was choosing to wear braces. Stepping in front of the camera, embracing the character and having fun with the experience.
There is something empowering about that.
We don't have to carry the shame attached to earlier versions of ourselves forever.
Sometimes life gives us an opportunity to revisit something that once made us feel insecure and experience it from an entirely different perspective.
What once represented embarrassment can become playful. What once made us want to hide can become something we confidently embrace. Something that once felt like it had power over us, can simply become part of our story. That was the unexpected gift of this collaboration for me.

This collaboration was about much more than just the braces. It became a reminder that confidence isn't always about becoming someone completely new. It's about reclaiming the parts of yourself you were once taught to hide.
